Once, Dronacharya, the teacher of the Kauravas and the Pandavas, wanted to test the archery skills of his students. He took a wooden bird and placed it on a tree branch, and called each student one by one.

Drona then asked each student to aim at the bird’s eye and then he asked what they could see. Each student responded differently, some said they could see the bird, some said they could see the tree, and some said they could see the sky.

When it was Arjuna’s turn, Drona asked him the same question. Arjuna replied that he could only see the bird’s eye, and not the tree, the sky, or anything else. Drona then asked him to shoot, but before he could do so, Drona asked him another question, “What do you see now?”.

Arjuna replied that he could only see the bird’s eye, to which Dronacharya said, “Don’t shoot until you can see nothing but the eye.”

Arjuna closed his eyes and visualized only the bird’s eye. When he opened his eyes again, all he could see was the eye. He then shot the arrow, which went straight through the eye of the bird.
